Don’t worry, professor O’keefe will be fixing any mistakes. www.fccc.us.

Corvette Stingray concept revealed at Chicago auto show

A picture of The Corvette Stingray concept stars as Sideswipe in the new Transformers movie.

The Corvette Stingray is back for an encore performance, but unfortunately for enthusiasts it's only in the movies. A styling concept dreamed up by Corvette designers two years ago will star as a character named Sideswipe in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. The concept was revealed Wednesday at the Chicago auto show.
The Stingray is one of the most dramatic and head-turning concepts Chevy has rolled out in recent memory. The sleek silver car draws cues from the original 1959 Stingray race car, and also looks a bit like the 1963 Corvette with its split-back rear window.
The concept was designed in General Motors' infamous, secretive Studio X, and caught the eye of
Transformers director Michael Bay--landing it a role in the movie that premieres in June. The Stingray has an almost shark-like grille, arching fenders and rolls on big chrome wheels.

After much consideration and discussion, our annual picnic came down to a vote between the Amvets Farm and Pinecliff Park. With the large group at February’s meeting, a show of hands decided that we would stay at the Amvets Farm on Rt. 144. The available date is Sunday, August 16th and the application has been turn in.

Making a Suggestion from Mike Furman

For Club purposes, list in the newsletter different people and info for each generation Corvette that can be specialists. I did this for the National 442 Performance club I started many many many years ago. I was the lead guy for 1966,1967,1970,1971 442's and W-30's. In this case I would be glad to be the representative for the C6's.

Callaway fans from- Chuck Snyder

I just contacted Callaway to see if they are going to do Honker installs at Carlisle this year.  My contact, Joanne Mercer, said they will be at Carlisle again, but although they haven’t previously done installs, they are considering it for this year. Anyone who might be interested, contact Callaway and let them know.  Callaway’s decision may depend on their perception of potential interest. This install takes a first timer at least a couple of hours.  If they will do it for the price of the unit, or just a few $ more, I think it would be well worth it.  As far as the price goes, I have not been able to find the unit for more than $10 less than Callaway’s retail price of $399.

My contact is jmercer@callawaycars.com

Racing News

Some of you know that the American Le Mans Series has hosted the factory Corvettes in GT1 class for years now and for the last year or two there has been absolutely NO competition.  The sanctioning body even decreased the fuel capacity of the Vettes and made them add 200 pounds to their chassis, and STILL no one wanted to compete with them.
Anyway, because of the lack of competition, or for maybe some other reason that I know nothing about, the factory Vettes are now switching to GT2 (IIRC actually the sanctioning body is reducing the GT1/GT2 classes to just GT), and after the Le Mans France 24 hr endurance race in June, the Vettes will be racing against all the Porches, Ferraris, and who knows what else, with a smaller displacement engine and a lot more fun!
I am planning on driving up to Mid Ohio to be in attendance for this first GT class Corvette competition.  I will be joining the Corvette Corral (at a pretty price I might add), to do all the fun stuff. For more corral information as it becomes available, visit www.americanlemans.com, and click on IMSA Car Corrals."
The reason I am telling all of you about this is because if any of you are interested in going on this trip, I would be glad to organize it as a club event, making a travel schedule, reserving lodging and meals as necessary.

75-80 Dragway set to reopen this spring

Track closed in 2005 after 45 years; racing will resume in April

The 75-80 Dragway, a piece of Monrovia's culture for 45 years, is set to reopen in April, according to a Web site run by its new operators.

The dragway closed in 2005, and has sat in limbo since, as weeds overtook the parking lot. The owner, Bill Wilcom, at the time planned to build up to 1,608 homes on the 400-acre farm, but a building moratorium imposed shortly after froze his plans.

75-80 Dragway has a page on Facebook.com, a social networking Web site, on which it announces that the dragway will reopen at 4 p.m. April 3.The dragway's Web site, www.75-80dragway.com , confirmed the opening day, as well as listing several other special events for the summer and fall months. It also listed Heads Up Racing as the company that would be managing it.

Fellow Caravaners,
I originally thought the activities in Bowling Green ended Sat 9/05. I found out differently. I have a different route mapped out for our return home. Does it make a difference to anyone if we left Saturday with final leg getting you home Sunday or Sunday with final leg getting you home Monday? I figure on coming up I 81 through Virginia and out Rt 66 east. Please let me know, if that Monday off would affect you.
Thanks, Bob

This new Grand Sport model is available as either a coupe or a convertible. It uses bodywork, wheels and tires from the Z06 Corvette, but it is powered by the LS3 Corvette engine. This power plant allows the Grand Sport to be available with an automatic transmission. The Z06 Corvette and the ZR1 Corvette are still available, but remain distinctly different models. The Grand Sport replaces the previous Z51 option.

Corvettes at Everedy Square/Shab Row

July 11th 11:00AM till 3:30PM

42 Corvettes were registered for the 4 annual Corvettes at Everedy Square.

Though the shows start time was officially 11:00 am, cars started arriving before 9:00. Corvettes were parked on the sidewalks in front of Flights of Fancy and Talbots, the parking lot for the Frederick Coffee Company, the area in front of the Antique Imports and The Clock Shop and the Farmers Market lot. NBC 25 Alive, Frederick News Post and Frederick.com were all present to cover the event. The link for NBC 25 is www.your4state.com . You will find the story that aired at 6:00PM Saturday in the video links. The coverage by Frederick.com is more of a political spot for one of Frederick’s mayoral candidates Chris Simpson with our show as a back drop. FCCC as a club does not endorse any one candidate for mayor. Mr. Simpson did have permission from Burt Anderson to campaign in the area. Chris also supplies FCCC with a PA system every year during Corvettes at Westridge.

An attempt will be made to post pictures at www.fccc.us

The FCCC picnic was held on Sunday August 16th. Though I don’t have a number yet as to how many members and guests were present, I think we set a record. Last year we ran out of crabs early, the beer made it and we had extra meat. This year we raised the crab supply, same beer and same meat. We had extra crabs; we ran out of meat and needed to make a beer run. Go figure? But I believe everyone who attended had a great time! If you picked up supplies and need to get reimbursed, bring your receipts to the meeting or contact Jim Brown at jbrown7177@comcast.net

At the Cracked Claw Restaurant in Urbana Md.

The unofficial renegade FCCC caravan to Bowling Green departed on September 2nd from the Mr. Tire parking lot in Frederick with 8 Corvettes and headed west. With an average speeds 75-85mph we could have arrived in BG in about 10-11 hours. But we decided to make a stop in Charleston to rescue Tom & Connie Manson from the official caravan group. They were being led by a 1982 faded, rusted and oil smoking Blazer with a top speed of 60mph. After that “brief” delay, we made it to BG around 7:30pm.

We were treated to a personal Corvette factory tour on Thursday morning. Our own FCCC member and NCM ambassador Mike Furman set up tour even though he was unable to make the trip with us. “Thank you very much!” We have a very nice 15th anniversary polo shirt to give you at the meeting. We were guided through the factory by Paul Pearson. Paul has never met us before, but took the time to guide, inform and answer all of our questions during the tour. The tour group all pitched for a FCCC club shirt that was presented to him before we entered the factory and we give Paul a big “Thank You!”

Other activities while we were there included time at the Opryland Hotel, downtown Nashville, whiskey distillery tours, cave adventures, group dinners, Hall of Fame banquet, Museum visits with a Beatles tribute band and let’s not forget a trip to Double Dogs for drinks and nachos!

It was a great trip, many pictures to see on the website link and everyone made it back safe!

This past Saturday we held our 20th Corvettes at Westridge!

Even though the skies were dark at times, the rain stayed away from us and we registered 63 Corvettes for the show. We awarded trophies 1st, 2nd and 3rd people’s choice for each class (C1-C6). Trophies were also awarded for 1st, 2ndand 3rd driver’s choice, “tricked out”, merchant’s choice and farthest distance. All the winners with pics will be posted on www.fccc.us as soon as Dave can gather all the info. The 50/50 prize of $114.00 was won by Carina DAlessio. The club took in close to $200.00 in donations for local charities.

Thanks to everyone for making the show a success. Kathy & Don Weddle stayed in contact with Westridge owner Trent to work out the details, ordered and picked up all of the trophies, held a bag stuffing at there home and collected many nice door prizes. Early morning set up was done by Dave Cole, Jim Brown, and Jeff DAlessio. Candy Cole did much of the early signing in and then with the help of Jo Brown made the rounds selling 50/50 tickets. Jim Brown was our MC and he and Diane Stull got an early start on the vote counting. Many kids were treated to a ride in the mini C5R Corvette that is capable of reaching a top speed of 30mph! The trophies were announced by Jim Brown and handed out by Frederick City mayoral candidate Chris Simpson. Chris has also has provided us with a PA system for many years.

Dues…

Now that the Picnic has past, Jim Brown has started collecting membership dues for 2010. If you joined right before the 2009 August picnic and didn’t get on the mailing list till after the picnic, you do NOT need to repay for 2010. Since all dues is used for the picnic, we can not expect you to pay for something you were not aware of. If you are not sure or have any questions, contact our treasurer Jim Brown at jbrown7177@comcast.net or 301-898-5270.

CRISWELL SHOW-

An offer was made to FCCC of having a show at Criswell Auto in Gaithersburg for 2010. It was brought up and discussed at the September meeting. There seems to be some definite interest in doing a show next year in mid May/early June. The suggested dates were May 15th, 22nd and June 5th, 12th. These are all Saturdays which mean Criswell would be open and the show would take place outside only. Unlike past show that were held on Sundays and cars would fill the showroom and shops. This would be a non NCCC sanctioned all Corvette fun show with people’s and driver’s choice awards. The details need to be finalized and after they are, volunteers with organizational skills, management skills, telephone skills, and people skills will be needed to make this happen. No big deal right? Just one more show.

I almost forgot something.

Do you know what that is?

What happens every October?

I mean except for the weather getting cooler and the leaves falling off the tree.

Nope, I’m not talking about Halloween.

NOMINATIONS FOR THE 2010 FCCC ADMINISTRATION!

Really give this some thought. We need some new blood in office. Especially at the top! The 3 year term limit is up for the President and he is not eligible to run again.

So, here is the list-

President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, Events committee, Newsletter and Web Site.

We will take nominations this week and again at the beginning of the November meeting with elections (if needed) directly after.

ARE YOU LOOKING FOR POST SEASON VEHICLE MAINTINANCE?

Don’t forget to make those needed repairs you have put off while the weather was nice. We have a new FCCC member/ mechanic.

Or if you prefer- Contact Joe Hughes at 410-756-5999. He can bring his tools and do the work in your garage.

Or call me (Dave) at 301-845-1331 to discuss your political future. If you decide it is not for you, I will not take it any farther than our phone conversation. No one will be left blindly on their own.

Your past administration will assist any new officers into next year and will stay close by to provide information that they may need.

Toys for Tots & Corvette Club of America-

This event is to benefit the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Campaign, which collects and distributes toys to needy children. Last year we collected dozens of toys, plus a large monetary donation from CCA as well as other private donations.

This CCA event was held on Saturday November 14, 2009, from 12 Noon to 3:00 pm, at the Hooters of Rockville.

A small group of FCCC members met in Frederick for the drive down to the event. The weather did actually get better by the time we pulled out and the sun made an appearance by the time we drove home. We were met at Hooters by the Marines who were there collecting the toys. We were greeted by the Corvette Club of America and we were thanked for attending. The cars were registered and we sat down for lunch. Joe Davies took a few photos and they will be posted on web page as soon as possible.

Also, we now have the contact info for the CCA Competition Chair or what we call a racing coordinator. We will stay in touch and post racing events for FCCC members.

Callaway Manager Chris Chessnoe attended and gave a presentation at the November FCCC meeting. He brought his 2010 Callaway Corvette Grand Sport SC606...that's 606 hp!!!!! He has a wealth of knowledge and was able to answer any and all questions. He is Reeves Callaway's right hand man. Though it was a rainy night, members still managed to get a peak at this incredible Corvette. A few pictures were taken and they are posted at www.fccc.us There is also a magazine article coming soon to Corvette Enthusiast, relating to Callaway Cars.
